Each area gives you something new and important on your main quest, and are all well worth revisiting later on when you get the chance. Unlike FFXIII's locales, Spira isn't a pretty wallpaper, but a connected and dense world. Not only does it make you care about the world more, but gives those emotional moments even more punch. Like the player, Tidus is a fish out of water, meaning you learn about the characters, lore and story as he does. But it's all in service to the story and the world.

On a surface level, FFX appears to cut out the exploration inherent in most RPGs in favour of the linear 'long corridor' approach FFXIIIwas heavily criticised for. The soundtrack is one of the series' best (go with the 'original' option), while the franchise's first foray into voice acting is always enjoyable, even when it's enjoyably bad. While the character models might look low-poly and the animations stiff at times, FFX is still a gorgeous-looking game, thanks to its vibrant art style based on Asian topography and architecture.īright colours and outlandish outfits abound, while a mix of pre-rendered backgrounds and 3D environments with a static camera frame the world beautifully. There's a lot more going on, but we wouldn't want to spoil it for newcomers. This is a world living in fear of a giant monster called Sin, and you accompany a new Summoner called Yuna on her Pilgrimage to gain the power to save the world, if only for brief period. In FFX you play as a young man named Tidus, transported to another time and place called Spira.
